Although I never experienced that much racism , I frequently overheard other White people in Houston saying very racist things in their conversations. It has a few pretty looking areas, but they are nowhere near as pretty as the other places I have been. I have lived in different times of life in Santa Ana CA, Seattle, Chicago, Manila, central and eastern Philippines, Bogotá, Medellín Colombia and Baja California. Even though I live in a mostly good area with private security they still sometimes get in and rob houses and steal cars. Make sure you have very good locks and security systems in Houston and stay indoors at night. Horrible crime aside, as previous comments have mentioned Houston has a horrible public transportation system and the city is heavily sprawled out, so you will need a car. Traffic in Houston is the worst I have seen and the drivers are the craziest I have seen. Lots of road rage incidents too and it seems that a lot of people in Houston drive while drunk or high, so be very careful on the road.

It’s fast, easy, and provides the perfect matte finish to really enhance the paint color. Not to mention it gives it the most velvety touch if you’re not really into that dry chalky look. The first piece I started with was my nightstand. I set the small jar of paint upside down in my sink while I cleaned my nightstand. I was painting all of this furniture in my bedroom because there was no way I could move all of the furniture downstairs into the garage and back up by myself. I was back and forth on the color choice and ultimately chose the Atelier. I decided to leave the mirror with the original stain and I am glad I did. After the nightstand was done in such a short period of time, I celebrated with a cup of coffee and planned my next piece of furniture to paint. I knew the desk was going to be a bit more time-consuming due to all the detailed pieces.

I think you just need some heavy stirring like peanut butter that is super separated. I did some sanding between coats to try and even it out. I would try a different brush also, especially if you’re using the Amy Howard one. Unless you put a clear coat on it like I did you may need to consult the Amy Howard website.

Once the furniture was clean and completely dry, I started painting and was shocked! It was super smooth and creamy and absolutely the easiest paint to work with…ever! From start to finish it took less than 30 minutes to do the entire piece. One step does not necessarily mean one coat, however that was the case with the black paint. This week, I found a cute bookcase headboard at a local consignment shop that I thought would be perfect in my daughter’s room.

A wooden BBQ skewer works great to stir the small jar. Coating in black and getting a distressed look is hard because it is so dark. It might need some serious elbow grease with the thick sandpaper. Chalk-based paint is unlike other paints I’ve used, and it has been labeled a more advanced project. So it is suggested that you test it out, play around with it, and learn as much as you can before starting a project.

The thicker you apply the paint the longer it will take for it to dry. Sometimes I will make my own chalk paint so I headed to Ace Hardware to pick out some paint colors when I stumbled upon the Amy Howard At Home One Step Paint. At first I thought, should I even attempt something new when I had very little time to pull this together, what if it was difficult to use? I used the spray clear coat so wiping it with a damp cloth may be fine but I would advise against heavy scrubbing with chalk paint. Amy Howard does offer its own line of paint sealers, and one in fact is a matte paint sealer. In my opinion though, the inexpensive minwax brand does just as good of a job protecting a freshly painted chalk finish. In short, yes you should probably always seal your painted furniture, but that also depends on the amount of durability and finish style you want your project to have.

The paint tone down the stain color and I like the juxtaposition of the grey paint against the stain. Step 5 – Miss Amy suggests to use her Amy Howard At Home 2″ Wax brush to coat the piece of furniture with One Step paint. I found a similar, round brush at Lowe’s for half the price that worked just as well. One Step paint can be rolled, brushed or sprayed on.
